Maisha Program 2009

"If we don't tell our stories, no one else will"

UPDATE: EXTENSION OF ANNUAL LAB DEADLINE TO MAY 23RD, 2009

Annual Maisha Filmmakers and Technical Lab 2009 23 DAY LAB - July 25th to August 16th, 2009 in Kampala, Uganda

Maisha will be having its annual lab with a 23 day lab to be held in Kampala, Uganda.

2009 now brings a new partnership to Maisha with the Abu Dhabi Film Commission. This year's Filmmakers Lab will include 8 participants from Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates. These Emirati artists will join our East African writer/directors in the 23-day program, which will focus on the basics of screenwriting and production. Each of our 14 writing participants will come to Maisha with a 5-10 page screenplay for a short film. The first 7 days of the workshop will be led by our 6 screenwriting mentors, who will conduct workshops on the fundamentals of screenwriting as well as meet with the participants one-on-one to oversee the revision of their work. Midway through the screenwriting segment, we will bring in 12 technical participants- specializing in sound mixing, cinematography, and editing. These trainees will attend seminars on all aspects of film production as well work one-on-one with mentors specializing in their field. The last 11 days of the workshop will be devoted to bringing four of our writers' screenplays to life, with the production mentors guiding the students through pre-production, shooting, and post-production.

Maisha will pay for participants' accommodation and meals. All participants will have to pay for their own transport to Kampala, Uganda.

Maisha Mission

Film is easily one of the most far-reaching mediums in the modern world, one that essentially validates a culture. In the entire African continent, there are few, if any, training programs for aspiring filmmakers. The few films that take place in East Africa are often made by foreigners without local crews, and generally focus on the political turmoil that plagues the region. While there is a flourishing and vital writing and theatre culture in the region, the bridge to convert this talent into screenplays and films has yet to be built.

MAISHA(meaning "life" in Kiswahili) provides new screenwriters and film directors from East Africa (Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania and Rwanda) and South Asia (India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh) with access to the professional training and production resources necessary to articulate their visions. Maisha aims to preserve, cultivate and unleash local voices from these regions, and to become one of the first targeted programs to offer structured and accessible resources to these emerging filmmakers. MAISHA is motivated by the belief that a film which explores the truths and idiosyncrasies of the specifically local often has the power to cross over and become significantly universal.
