Cooper has received numerous awards including AIVF's Indie Award, the Brandeis Citation for Film, the New York Film Critics Special Award for Programming, and New York Women in Film's MUSE Award. In 1995 she received an Honorary Doctorate from the American Film Institute (AFI). Cooper has served on funding panels for the New York State Council on the Arts, the National Endowment for the Arts and the Soros Foundation’s Open Society documentary grants. She has been a juror at the Naples Film Festival and the Sarajevo International Film Festival, and was jury Chair at the AFI’s first SilverDocs Festival in 2003.
