Spike Lee
In 1986, Spike Lee made his directorial debut with “She's Gotta Have It” (1986), a comedy about sexual relationships. The movie was made for $175,000 and garnered well over $7,000,000 upon its release. Since then, Lee has firmly established himself as an intelligent and trailblazing auteur – and likely the most prominent and significant African-American director in motion picture history. Lee is known for his politically conscious projects, most notably 1992's “Malcolm X,” which resulted in an Oscar nomination for lead actor Denzel Washington.
